Florida garage door styles, plainly explained.
In Palm Beach County, the door style you pick affects three things at once: curb appeal, hurricane survival, and how your hardware ages in salt air. Most homeowners overweight the curb appeal and underweight the other two — then call us when a tropical storm twists a non-rated door off its track. We've installed every major style across PBC since 2018 and can walk you through the trade-offs in plain English.
The five styles we install most.
- Steel insulated (sectional) — workhorse. 70% of PBC installs. Best price-to-durability ratio. Insulated cores meet FL Energy Code.
- Carriage-house — the look of swing-out wood barn doors but with modern sectional sliding mechanism. Premium curb appeal for older PBC neighborhoods.
- Glass + aluminum — modern minimalist. Common in Boca and Manalapan luxury homes. Hurricane-rated impact glass is required east of US-1.
- Modern flush — clean panels with no raised lines. Mid-century PBC homes (Lake Park, Lake Worth, parts of Delray) wear this style best.
- Custom wood — mahogany, cedar, or oak. Premium pricing. Wood expands and contracts in FL humidity — we use proper aluminum framing to prevent warping.
Florida-specific considerations.
Three factors override pure aesthetic preference in PBC:
- Salt-air corrosion. East of US-1 (Boca, Delray, Manalapan, Palm Beach), galvanized hardware doubles your effective service life. Standard hardware will rust within 5-7 years.
- Hurricane wind load. All FL replacement doors must be Florida Product Approval-listed. Each city's permit office checks the FL Approval number before sign-off.
- Insurance discounts. A hurricane-rated impact door can reduce your homeowner's premium by 4-15% depending on the carrier. We provide the FL Approval certificate for your insurance file.
Pick your style first, then call us. We'll match it to a specific manufacturer model that meets FL Building Code for your ZIP code's wind zone and quote in writing.
