Insulated garage doors lower garage temperatures by 15-20°F in summer compared to single-layer doors — a major comfort win for any Florida home where the garage shares a wall with conditioned living space. R-12 is the standard insulation rating in PBC; R-18 is the premium for homes with garages adjoining bedrooms or finished basements.
All modern hurricane-rated impact doors in PBC are insulated to at least R-9 (a code requirement). Our standard install is R-12 polyurethane-foam-injected steel sandwich construction. R-18 upgrades cost about $400-$600 more for a typical 16x7 door.
Insulation reduces noise transmission too. R-18 doors are significantly quieter when cycling — important for homes where the garage shares a wall with a bedroom.
Installed price ranges.
| R-12 standard insulated (most popular) | $2,800 |

Why insulated doors are a Florida no-brainer.
"Insulated" refers to the foam core sandwiched between the door's outer and inner steel skins. R-value measures the resistance to heat transfer — higher is better. In Florida, where the garage is often attached to the house and frequently used as a laundry room or workshop, the insulation reduces cooling costs by an estimated 8-15% versus a single-skin door. PBC homeowners with attached garages should default to insulated; the upcharge pays back in 2-3 years.
R-value tiers we install.
- R-9 — entry insulated. Most common in builder-grade installations. Decent improvement over uninsulated.
- R-13 to R-15 — mid-tier. Three-layer construction (steel-foam-steel). Our most-installed PBC option.
- R-18+ — premium. Polyurethane foam (denser than polystyrene), thermal-broken. Best ROI for detached studio garages and home gyms.
Beyond energy: noise and rigidity.
Insulated doors are quieter — both the operation and the sound transmission from outside. If you've ever heard a thunderstorm boom through an uninsulated garage door, you've heard why this matters. The foam core also adds structural rigidity, which matters for hurricane wind-load resistance. Many FL Product Approval-listed hurricane-rated doors are only available in insulated versions.
Brands and pricing.
Clopay Gallery 3-layer is our most-installed insulated steel — strong price-to-performance ratio. Amarr Lincoln 3000 is the workhorse alternative. Wayne Dalton 9100 is a premium-segment option. Installed PBC pricing typically runs $1,400–$2,800 for a 16-foot insulated steel double.
